Sleeping Herb (爆睡ハーブ) is an episode from the 1979 series.

Plot Summary[]

An annual summer firework festival at the riverside is coming up, with the gang discussing about what kind of fun they'll be having. The discussion quickly turns sour after Gian reveals his intention to take part in the talent show and sings for the audience all night, much to the horror of Nobita, Shizuka and Suneo.

While Shizuka and Suneo are tasked with preparing a bouquet and cheering papers, Nobita rushes home to request Doraemon in averting the disaster. Realizing that Gian is going to turns the event into "Firework Festival of Hell", Doraemon sents Mii-chan to call off their friends in participating as he tries to come up with a counter-plan. Their antics end up waking Nobisuke, who has been trying to get a sleep after yesterday's long work hour. Feeling sorry for Nobisuke, Doraemon brings out "Sleeping Herb", a gadget that is capable of putting those that smells its fragrance to sleep, which he uses on Nobisuke. Seeing the gadget's power, Nobita proposes that they use it to put Gian to sleep and save the entire town from his actrocious recital, which Doraemon agrees. However, Doraemon ends up putting himself to sleep in a demonstration, but not before warning Nobita to not use the gadget at night, else it will have the opposite effect instead.

At Gian's house, Suneo is almost done with his task as Gian also finishes his costume preparation. Before the two could head out, Gian's mother orders Gian to go deliver the goods, which he quickly "persuade" Suneo to do in his place. Around the same time, Nobita runs into Sensei trying to inform Tamako about his recent grade in class, forcing him to put Sensei under sleep with the gadget. Shortly after, Nobita witnesses Gian's bike being parked nearby. Believing that Gian is out delivering for his store, Nobita tries to ambush him, but ends up to put a dog and Suneo to sleep instead.

As the sun begins to set, Nobita joins up with Shizuka and Gian at the festival ground, with Gian instructs Nobita to cheer in Suneo's place before he heads up to the stage, hijacks it from the announcer, and begins to sing to the audience. Left with no choice, Nobita puts Shizuka to sleep to spare her, and tries put Gian to sleep as well by throwing the bouquet with the gadget hidden inside to Gian. Unfortunately for Nobita, the sun has gone down at that very moment, reversing the gadget's effect, making Gian full of energy, and allowing him to sing his destructive song throughout the night, much to Nobita and the town people's suffering.

Doraemon finally wakes up the day after and goes out to look for Nobita, only to find him collapsing at the Open Lot. Nobita then reveals his failure to put Gian to sleep at the festival, much to Doraemon's pity and understanding. The two are interrupted by Gian, who chases after Suneo to punish him for not attending his recital. Suneo ends up revealing that he fell asleep due to the gadget used by Nobita, and due to an unexpected arrival of Nobisuke and his thanks for Doraemon's gadget, causing Gian's to become angry as he believes that the three of them conspired to prevent him from singing. Nevertheless, Doraemon manages to cover up by claiming that Nobita used to gadget to "remove sleepiness from Gian" so he could sing throughout the night, causing Gian to be full of gratitude toward Nobita instead and promises to give his friends an "overnight recital" soon in the future.

Fortunately, Gian's plan is put on hold with his mother arrival, who proceeds to chase after Gian on his bike for not only he was missing throughout the night, but also for failing to deliver all the goods. The episode ends with Gian chases after Suneo for not finishing the task he gave him as his mother chase after him, while Nobita and Doraemon are relieved that they're spared from Gian's wrath this time, though they do feel bad that Suneo has to take the blow in their place.
