Nobita and his friends are heading back home from school when they see a cat abandoned in the empty lot. Nobita asks if someone can keep it. However, Gian has a dog, Suneo has a cat, and Shizuka has a dog. Left with no choice, Nobita decides to sneak it back home, despite the fact that his mother, Tamako, hates cats.

When Nobita gets home, he convinces Doraemon to let him raise the cat. When Tamako goes up to Nobita's room to check on him, Nobita hides the cat by throwing it into Doraemon's mouth. Suspecting something is up, she checks the room, but is unable to find anything and leaves.

Doraemon comes up with a plan to let Tamako see the cat's good side in order to let it stay. He brings out the gadget, "Animal Hatching Egg", in a bid to let Nobita change into the looks of the same cat. In the meantime, Doraemon hides the real cat in the shed.

In his cat form, Nobita tries to do helpful things, like getting the mail for Tamako. Unfortunately, when she realizes that it was a cat that delivered the mail, she panics and shoos Nobita outside. Figuring that Nobita brought an animal home, her sharp instincts lead her to the garden shed, where the real cat comes out. Meanwhile, Doraemon and Nobita go around the neighborhood, trying to get someone to adopt the cat, but nobody is interested.

In the Nobi house, Tamako is looking for the cat when she hears it meowing by her iron. Tamako had forgotten to switch off her iron when she was ironing the clothes, and a fire nearly started! Thankfully, the cat helped to alert her. Tamako thanks the cat with a bowl of milk. Just then, a respectful lady from the town comes to visit Tamako. She comments how cute the cat is, which makes Tamako even more willing to accept the cat.

All during this time, an elderly man sees Nobita-turned-cat and recognizes it as his grandson's cat, "Little Blackie". The man chased the cat out after it broke his precious vase, but his grandson wants Little Blackie back.

While Tamako is out getting cat food, Doraemon and Nobita-turned-cat happily go home and return Little Blackie to its original owner. When Tamako returns home and is unable to find the cat, she is so upset that she develops a fever. Therefore, Doraemon asks Nobita to turn back into a cat in order to make his mother happy. The story ends with Tamako stroking Nobita-turned-cat while asking why her son has not returned home yet.
