Cinar is a now-defunct Canadian media company who are known for having produced numerous children's cartoons. They were later renamed to Cookie Jar in 2004 after its assets were sold to a group led by former Nelvana executives Michael Hirsh and Toper Taylor, and in 2008 they agreed to merge with another animation studio, DiC Entertainment. Later, their library of series was acquired by DHX Media in 2012, who are now known as WildBrain.
The company had experienced a few rounds of scandals throughout its lifespan, with one in particular having to do with one of their original series Robinson Sucroe (1994). It was discovered that Cinar had plagiarized the premise of the show from The Adventures of Robinson Curiosity, an unsuccessfully pitched pilot created by Claude Robinson. In 2009, Claude sued the company over this and won the case. The plagiarism incident and subsequent scandal surrounding accusations of transferring money to the Bahamas in 2000 eventually would result in criminal charges, convictions, and fines for a number of executives at the company and at two hedge funds - Norshield Asset Management and Mount Real.
Connection with Doraemon[]
In the 1980's, Cinar produced an English dub of the 1979 Doraemon anime called The Adventures of Albert and Sidney. This dub was supposed to air on Superstation WTBS in the United States, but this never happened, though the dub did air anyway in Barbados.
