Doraemon (ドラえもん) is the opening song of the 1973 anime. It was sung by Harumi Naitō, written by Fujiko Fujio and composed by Nobuyoshi Koshibe. The song was used for all 26 episodes of the anime. The visuals for this opening, as well as the ones for the credits are part of the only publicly available footage of this series. It has yet to make an appearance in any form outside of its original series. The theme itself, alongside a few other of the shows tracks was released on vinyl record by NIPPON COLUMBIA CO., LTD.[1]
Plot[]
The opening sequence depicts a time tunnel that is constantly morphing. Inside the tunnel, Doraemon is seen zooming by in his time machine. As soon as he exits the frame, it cuts to a pale blue screen. The title then appears, reading "トラえもん", and with the characters crashing into each other from the right. Once they settle, a pair of eyes bounces around on the letters before settling down between the ト and the ラ characters, forming a ド character. The pair of eyes quickly blinks, and the scene cuts to a darker blue shot where two different eyes come into the scene and land near each other in the center. Doraemon's outline appears, and after it is completed, it shows Doraemon in color, who smiles after shaking his head.
The opening then cuts to Doraemon traveling in his time machine again. He presses some buttons and pulls a lever, which opens up a bright, white square that draws closer to the screen. This square turns out to be the hole of a cabinet in Nobita's desk, out of which Doraemon comes falling in front of it. The scene then transitions to Doraemon walking on the street with a happy expression until a dog comes out and barks at him. Doraemon does a handstand and pulls a face at the dog, scaring it away.
The opening sequence continues with Gian and Suneo playing in an empty lot, with Gian holding a bat and Suneo wearing a glove. Suneo looks shocked and pokes Gian, who turns around with a similar expression on his face. The screen slides to the left, revealing other equally surprised kids, including Nobita. The scene then cuts to Shizuka buying fish from a fishmonger. As soon as Shizuka turns around, the fishmonger, who is holding a fish, drops it, and they both have the same surprised expression.
Next, the scene cuts to a yellow cat walking along the street with the same fish in its mouth. When Doraemon passes by, the cat gets startled and swallows the fish. At the same time, a group of various cats come out of a nearby trash can and start following Doraemon. The opening then shows Doraemon flying over town in his Takecopter and landing on a roof near the Nobi residence. He does another handstand, and the scene zooms out to reveal Tamako and Nobisuke looking at him from the garden.
The opening continues with Doraemon, his eyes filled with hearts and his tongue sticking out, as he sees an attractive-looking cat. He falls back from the roof into the ground below, bouncing a little. Gian then chases Nobita, trying to swing his bat at him as they both run. Nobita hides behind Doraemon and then runs away in a panic. Doraemon looks to the right with his hands in his pocket, only to be stepped on by Gian. With a big footprint mark on his face and an annoyed expression, Doraemon pulls out the Magic Hand from his pocket and uses it to grab Gian. He almost puts him on top of what looks like a smokestack until Suneo scares him off with a toy rat attached to a long stick. Doraemon runs away.
In a state of panic, Doraemon runs up the school's wall and holds on to one of the clock's hands. The hand keeps swinging down as Doraemon tries his best to hold on. The opening sequence ends with a freeze frame of Doraemon's panicked expression, which closes in on his upside-down face.
Trivia[]
- This song was heavily influenced by Pink Panther cartoon's soundtrack.
- So far, this is the only officially released media, being only on vinyl record, of the anime itself, whereas the majority of the actual show itself is known for it's loss.
- Due to the series never making it out of Japan, it has yet to receive any official international versions.
- Due to the song's lyrics, the title is often mistaken as Boku no Doraemon.
- Despite not making a single appearance in the 1973 series, Dorami is present in the cover.
