In the manga, Yōko was originally filling the role of a close friend to Bon Namihira, however as Yumiko Yasukawa became a notable figure in the plot, Yōko was gradually replaced with Yumiko, and Yoko eventually retreated from the plot itself. Since then, their roles and backgrounds and physical appearances have been constantly mingled throughout the franchise.[1]

Yumiko's changes in her design and background in the 2024 anime are presumably to deal with her replacements with Yoko both in the manga and the 1989 anime. These inconsistences, along with others such as the separation of Bon and Ream in the part 1 and the later formation of a formal duo by Bon and Yumiko, were likely caused by the demise of the manga (cancellation of the part 1 and repeated hiatuses and irregular releases of part 2 and 3 chapters, and the eventual cancellation of the manga) due to the suspension of Monthly Shōnen World and health issues and the death of Fujiko F. Fujio.[1][2]

Unlike the 1989 anime adaptation in which Yoko didn't appear, the 2024 anime adaptation revived the original role and depictions of Yoko with some minor changes.
